Playing their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games of 2017 at Brookside Park on Friday (March 24), Ashland University's softball team split a doubleheader with Ferris State.
The Eagles lost a 9-5 decision in the opener before winning 11-8 in Game 2. Ashland is 10-11 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC, while the Bulldogs are 8-12, 1-1.
In Game 1 on Friday, Ashland took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings. In the first, freshman catcher Cassie Haight's bunt scored freshman designated player Dayna Denner. The Eagles' second run came home courtesy of a home run from senior shortstop Alexis Van Horn.
Ferris State countered with three runs in the top of the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Sophomore third baseman Paige Summers had three of Ashland's 14 hits, and Denner, senior center fielder Ally Farrah and Van Horn each had two. Junior pitcher Paige McMenemy took the loss, allowing six hits, five runs and two walks and striking out two in 4 1/3 innings.
In the nightcap, the Eagles rallied from an 8-6 deficit and scored five runs in the top of the seventh. Senior left fielder Jenny Raguz drove in two runs with a single, junior pinch-hitter Sadie Cunningham and Farrah added RBIs on groundouts and McMenemy drove in the final run with a single.
Denner was 4-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, Van Horn was 3-for-4 and scored twice and Raguz was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. McMenemy earned the win after tossing 2 1/3 innings of relief.
UP NEXT: A home doubleheader for a third consecutive day, Saturday (March 25) at 10 a.m. vs. Grand Valley State.
