Ashland University softball completed its opening weekend of home games with a split against Grand Valley State on Saturday (March 25) at Brookside Park.

The Eagles (10-12 overall, 1-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) lost the first game, 5-1, falling behind the Lakers (9-13, 1-3) in the fourth inning and never recovering.

Freshman catcher Cassie Haight was the only Eagle with a multi-hit effort in Game 1. She went 2-for-3.

The lone RBI came off the bat of senior Jenny Raguz, as she drove in sophomore Paige Summers in the bottom of the seventh.

In Game 2, AU beat GVSU, 10-2, for its largest margin of victory so far this season.

Ashland also had six extra-base hits in Game 2. Prior to this outing, the most the Eagles had in a game this season was four.

With two doubles and a triple, freshman Dayna Denner was responsible for three of them. She also reached base on a walk and scored two runs in the victory.

Summers and senior Alexis Van Horn joined the hit parade with home runs. It's the second time this season the two of them have homered in the same contest, and those two games are the only games in which the Eagles homered more than once.

Haight added three singles to follow up on her performance in Game 1, this time leading the team with three RBIs.

Leading the team with three runs apiece were Van Horn and senior Ally Farrah.

Eagles junior Paige McMenemy earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with five strikeouts, one walk and two earned runs.

UP NEXT: Ashland gets back on the field with a non-conference doubleheader at Cedarville in Cedarville, Ohio, on Monday (March 27) at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.
