Ashland University softball split with Lake Erie in Painesville, Ohio, on a Saturday (April 8) in which the Eagles were playing for a cause much larger than the sport itself.
During warmups, the Eagles wore T-shirts dedicated to the #FaithFightFrost campaign, supporting University of Indianapolis head coach Melissa Frost's current fight against breast cancer.
A total of 43 teams from 16 states and 14 conferences supported the cause on Saturday.
The Eagles (17-16 overall, 5-5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) beat the Storm (8-14, 4-6), 4-3, in Game 1.
Lake Erie had 11 hits compared to Ashland's five, but AU junior Paige McMenemy pitched the entire game to bring her record to 9-4 on the season.
Sophomore Paige Summers was the only Eagle with a multi-hit game. Her two-RBI single in the top of the first gave Ashland a lead that it would not give up.
The other AU RBIs came in the third inning off the bats of freshman Cassie Haight and sophomore Kylie Asmus.
In Game 2, the two teams compiled 26 hits. Lake Erie had 14 hits and Ashland had 12. In the end, Lake Erie came away with the 7-5 victory.
The three, four and five hitters for the Storm went 9-for-11 combined.
Sophomore Hannah Stroe went the distance for the Eagles, as she has in her last five outings.
McMenemy, Haight, freshman Dayna Denner and senior Alexis Van Horn all had two hits for Ashland.
One of Denner's hits was her second home run of the season.
Haight led the Eagles with two RBIs, brining her season total to 15. She is third on the team in that category.
Ashland has now won one and lost one in all five of its GLIAC doubleheaders this season.
UP NEXT: The Eagles will get back on the field on Sunday (April 9) for a doubleheader against Walsh in Canton, Ohio, beginning at noon.
