After splitting in its first five Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheaders, Ashland University softball swept Walsh on Sunday (April 9) in Canton, Ohio.

The Eagles (19-16 overall, 7-5 GLIAC) never trailed Walsh (8-23, 1-9) on the afternoon, as they won the first game, 3-1, and the second game, 8-2.

Ashland wasted no time getting on top in the first game, as freshman Dayna Denner homered in the leadoff spot and senior Alexis Van Horn left the yard just two batters later.

Denner, the only Eagle to record at least two hits in the game, is now second on the team with three home runs this season. Van Horn's homer was her team-leading fifth.

Sophomore Abbie Sgro earned her second save of 2017 in Game 1.

Van Horn helped AU get comfortable in the second game, as well. Her double in the bottom of the first scored Denner and senior Ally Farrah

The other AU RBIs came off the bats of junior Paige McMenemy, freshman Cassie Haight and sophomores Paige Summers, Kylie Asmus and Halle Dorko.

Denner led the Eagles again with three hits. She also stole two bases for the first time in her college career.

McMenemy started both games in the circle and earned two wins, moving herself into a tie for third in the GLIAC with 11 wins in her first season as an Eagle.

Farrah had three hits on the day and stole four bases. She is now fourth in the conference with a .448 batting average and second in the conference with 21 steals this season.

UP NEXT: Ashland has a non-conference doubleheader set for Wednesday (April 12) against Urbana in Urbana, Ohio, at 3:30 p.m.
