Ashland University head softball coach Emlyn Knerem has announced the addition of Akron Racers infielder Maddy Grimm as the Eagles' assistant coach.
"I'm very excited that Maddy will be the newest addition to our coaching staff," Knerem said. "She was so much fun to watch on the field as a player, and I know she will bring the same fire and passion to the game and to our program as a coach.
"Maddy's ability to break down the mechanics of our hitters and make adjustments to swings will be an asset to this team. I think she can take our offense to a whole new level this season."
Grimm, drafted by the Racers at No. 23 overall of the 2017 National Pro Fastpitch Draft, saw action in 22 games as a rookie, hitting .286 with three home runs and nine RBIs.
She turned pro after a successful career at NCAA Division I Kent State, a career in which she hit .330 with 172 runs scored, 198 hits, 43 doubles, four triples, 69 home runs and 192 RBIs. Grimm is the Golden Flashes' all-time leader in home runs and RBIs, was a three-time first-team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Midwest Region selection, was the 2017 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and earned three first-team All-MAC citations.
Grimm hit at least 13 home runs each year for the Golden Flashes from 2014-17, and had a career-high 55 RBIs as a senior.
Off the field, Grimm was a two-time MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and three-time Academic All-MAC.
