Thanks to wins over Lindenwood (6-4, eight innings) and Wisconsin-Parkside (4-3) on Saturday (Feb. 24) at the Lewis Dome Invitational in Rosemont, Ill., Ashland University's softball team has begun the 2018 season with a 3-1 record.

Against Lindenwood, the Eagles had leads of 1-0 after a half-inning, 3-2 through 3½ innings and 4-2 after 4½ frames. The game went to extra innings tied at 4, however, and the international tiebreaker rule was placed into effect.

In the top of the eighth, Ashland scored twice on a fielding error which brought junior first baseman Paige Summers home, and a wild pitch which scored freshman pinch-runner Jaylin Narvaez.

Junior pitcher Hannah Stroe earned her first win of the young season, allowing eight hits, four runs (three earned) and a walk and striking out seven. Both sophomore shortstop Bree Gill and junior designated player Kylie Asmus had two hits each, and Gill, Asmus and sophomore catcher Cassie Haight all drove in a run each.

The victory vs. Parkside came with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior center fielder Erika Farst scored from second base on a throwing error to tie the game, then another throwing error on the next play allowed sophomore second baseman Camille Pollutro to come across with the winning run.

Farst, sophomore third baseman Dayna Denner and junior left fielder Halle Dorko each had two of AU's seven hits, and Denner added a triple and two RBIs. Senior pitcher Paige McMenemy is 2-0 this season after authoring a complete-game seven hitter, allowing three runs and no walks and striking out five.

UP NEXT: The start of the annual Florida trip, March 4 at 9 a.m. vs. Assumption.
