Ashland Splits Opening Day Of Florida Trip

On the first day of its annual Florida trip, Ashland University's softball team moved to 4-2 on the young season after a split of two games on Sunday (March 4).

In the second game of the day, the Eagles used a seven-run top of the fifth inning to defeat Wayne State (Neb.), 13-8. Junior third baseman Paige Summers had the big bat in the win, driving in five runs and going 2-for-5 with a double, while sophomore second baseman Camille Pollutro was 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Junior center fielder Erika Farst, senior pitcher Paige McMenemy and junior left fielder Katie Mitchell each had two of AU's 12 hits, and Farst and Mitchell each crossed the plate three times.

McMenemy improved to 3-0 in the pitcher's circle, going the first 5 2/3 innings. Freshman Laney Jones finished the game with 1 1/3 scoreless frames.

To open the trip, the Eagles lost to Assumption, 6-5, on a run in the top of the seventh inning. Summers was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs, while Farst was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.

UP NEXT: Monday (March 5) vs. Concordia-St. Paul at 2 p.m. and Winona State at 4:30 p.m. in Florida.
