Pitching, Power Lead Eagles To Road Sweep Of ODU

Ashland University's softball team is enjoying playing in its own state.

After going 6-8 in play in Illinois and Florida, the Eagles have started 4-0 in Ohio contests, including 10-0 (six innings) and 4-3 wins on Monday (March 19) at Ohio Dominican.

In Monday's opener, the Eagles (10-8) led 1-0 through four innings, then opened up the offense with five runs in the top of the fifth, and a four-spot in the sixth.

Junior third baseman Paige Summers provided the biggest bat in Game 1, going 2-for-3 with two home runs, five RBIs and two runs scored. Junior first baseman Kylie Asmus was 3-for-4, drove in a run and scored two, while sophomore second baseman Bree Gill and junior pinch-hitter Katie Manahan each collected two RBIs.

The shutout went to senior pitcher Paige McMenemy (6-2), who dialed up a four-hitter with no walks and two strikeouts.

Monday's second game saw Ashland break a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh when freshman left fielder Amanda Wire's bunt RBI single brought in junior pinch-runner Laura Girgash.

Asmus was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while freshman right fielder Emma Lawson scored two runs. Freshman pitcher Laney Jones (1-2) earned her first collegiate win with 2 2/3 innings of two-hit, one-run relief with five strikeouts.

UP NEXT: Wednesday's (March 21) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Tiffin has been postponed to a date to be announced. The Ashland home opener is scheduled for Saturday (March 24) at noon vs. Walsh at Brookside Park.
