Ashland Drops Two In GLIAC Openers At Tiffin

To begin 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, Ashland University's softball team lost 3-0 and 3-2 decisions on Sunday (March 25) afternoon at Tiffin.

The Eagles are 10-10 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC, while the Dragons moved their winning streak to 10 games in improving to 16-11, 4-0.

Sunday's opener saw the game's only runs come across in the bottom of the fourth, as Tiffin scored three times. That half-inning featured four Dragons hits and two Eagle errors.

The tough-luck loss was suffered by senior pitcher Paige McMenemy (6-3), who went the distance on a six-hitter, allowing three runs (two earned) and two walks, and striking out four. Ashland had two hits on offense, and five errors on defense.

In Sunday's second game, the Eagles climbed back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the contest with single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman shortstop Abigail Butler drove in the run in the fifth on a double, and junior designated player Katie Manahan knotted the game with a run in the sixth on an RBI single.

Tiffin scored the winning run in Game 2 on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior pitcher Hannah Stroe (2-5) allowed eight hits, three runs (one earned) and two walks and struck out three in six innings. The Eagles had four hits and four errors in the nightcap.

UP NEXT: The 2018 home openers at Brookside Park on Tuesday (March 27) vs. No. 18-ranked Grand Valley State have been postponed. Ashland's next scheduled games are Friday (March 30) at 3:30 p.m. vs. Davenport at home.
