In the third and fourth games of a stretch of 14 games away from home in nine days, Ashland University's softball team lost 3-1 and 5-1 decisions at Purdue Northwest on Thursday (April 19).
The Eagles are 15-15 overall and 5-7 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pride are 20-17, 10-10.
Thursday's opener saw Ashland get on the board first. In the top of the first inning, sophomore second baseman Camille Pollutro's RBI groundout allowed junior first baseman Kylie Asmus to come home with an unearned run. Purdue Northwest tied the game at 1 with a run in the bottom of the second, and the game would stay that way until the bottom of the sixth, when the Pride scored twice for the final margin of victory.
Ashland had just five hits off PNW pitcher Courtney Blackwell, who also allowed no earned runs and two walks while striking out three. The loss went to senior pitcher Paige McMenemy (7-6), who yielded six hits, three runs and no walks and struck out four in 5 2/3 innings.
In Game 2, a scoreless tie was broken by a Purdue Northwest five-run bottom of the fourth. Ashland scored its run in the top of the fifth on a run-scoring single by Asmus.
Pride pitcher Samantha Burgard scattered seven hits in the complete-game victory. She struck out three and didn't walk a batter. Ashland junior pitcher Hannah Stroe (5-7) allowed four hits, five runs (three earned) and a walk and whiffed five in 3 1/3 frames.
UP NEXT: Two "home" games on Friday (April 20) at 3:30 p.m. vs. Northwood (17-14, 5-9) at Tiffin. Ashland will be the home team in both contests.
