On Saturday (April 21) afternoon, Ashland University's softball team accomplished something no other Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team has done in 2018 – beat Grand Valley State.

The Eagles took Game 1 on Saturday, 2-0, to deal the Lakers their first GLIAC defeat of the season and snap GVSU's 21-game overall winning streak. Grand Valley State won the second game of the twinbill, 7-0.

Ashland is 17-17 overall and 7-9 in the conference, while the No. 10-ranked Lakers are 30-6, 17-1.

The Game 1 victory was a milestone for Ashland freshman pitcher Laney Jones. In her first collegiate complete game, Jones (3-2) authored a two-hit shutout, striking out five and walking one for her first win at AU as a starter.

Jones and the Eagles received just enough offense from junior first baseman Kylie Asmus, who hit a solo home run to start the top of the fourth inning, and junior third baseman Paige Summers, who did the same to start the top of the seventh. The round-trippers were Asmus' third and Summers' seventh of 2018, respectively.

Jones out-dueled GVSU pitcher Allison Lipovsky, who allowed three hits, two runs and no walks and struck out 15 in the defeat.

In the nightcap, Jones started once again and extended her scoreless innings streak to 15 2/3 prior to an unearned run scoring following a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

Junior designated player Halle Dorko was 2-for-3, and Asmus had a hit to extend her hitting streak to 15 games.

Laker pitcher Allie Grys twirled a complete-game five-hit shutout, striking out five and walking one.

UP NEXT: A fourth straight day with a GLIAC doubleheader away from Ashland, Sunday (April 22) at 1 p.m. at Davenport.
