Eagles Go 1-1 On Day 2 Of Florida Trip

For the second consecutive day to begin its annual Florida trip, Ashland University's softball team split its docket of games.

On Monday (March 4), the Eagles (5-3) defeated Mercyhurst by a 2-1 count, then lost to LIU Post, 3-1.

The victory over the Lakers saw Ashland score single runs in the bottom of the third and fifth innings, then pitchers Abbie Sgro and Laney Jones held the lead up. Sgro, a senior, improved to 2-0 on the young season by allowing four hits, a run and three walks and striking out one in 5 2/3 innings. Jones, a sophomore, picked up the save by recording the last four outs, three by strikeout.

Senior right fielder Halle Dorko drove in both of AU's runs in the victory, senior first baseman Kylie Asmus scored both runs, and Asmus and junior designated player Dayna Denner each had two hits.

In the loss to the Pioneers, senior pitcher Hannah Stroe (2-2) allowed eight hits, three runs and three walks striking out four in six innings. Ashland's No. 8 and 9 hitters, sophomore left fielder Emma Lawson and senior center fielder Erika Farst, each collected two hits.

Ashland's third day of Florida action will be Tuesday (March 5) against Southern Indiana at 9:15 a.m., and vs. Findlay at 11:15 a.m.
