Finishing its eight-game road trip on Sunday (April 7), Ashland University's softball team lost both ends of the doubleheader at Davenport, 2-1 and 5-4.
The Eagles (23-13 overall, 9-7 GLIAC) opened the scoring in the first game, putting up a run in the top of the third inning on an RBI triple from senior first baseman Kylie Asmus. The Panthers (17-14, 9-5) responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, both of which were unearned following a two-out AU error.
Asmus was 2-for-3 with the triple and the RBI, while sophomore pitcher Laney Jones (10-6) took the tough-luck loss, authoring a complete-game five-hitter, allowing no earned runs and three walks and striking out three.
Davenport pitcher Mallory Teunissen earned the Game 1 win, holding the Eagles to four hits, a run and a walk and striking out five.
The nightcap was a back-and-forth contest, with Ashland striking the first blow with two runs in the top of the first on run-scoring hits by junior designated hitter Dayna Denner (double) and senior third baseman Paige Summers (single).
Davenport countered with two runs in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the fourth for a 3-2 advantage, then the Eagles re-took the lead in the top of the sixth with a two-spot on Denner's eighth home run of 2019, and her sixth since March 24.
It was the Panthers, however, who scored the game's final runs when Gabby Palazzolo's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth put Davenport up for good.
Denner, who came into the day leading the GLIAC in RBIs with 32, was 2-for-3 with the double, homer, two runs scored and three RBIs. Sophomore left fielder Emma Lawson went 2-for-3.
Senior pitcher Hannah Stroe (11-7) went the distance for AU, yielding seven hits, five runs (four earned) and four walks, and striking out four. Teunissen won both ends of the doubleheader, pitching two innings of relief for the victory in Game 2.
The Eagles will return to Brookside Park on Wednesday (April 10) at 3 p.m. for another GLIAC doubleheader vs. Saginaw Valley State.
