In a reversal of a doubleheader at Brookside Park on March 20, Ashland University's softball team swept Northwood on the road on Saturday (April 20), 2-1 and 4-2.

The two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victories give the Eagles a three-game winning streak, and leave them at 28-18 overall and 13-11 in the conference. Ashland and the Timberwolves (23-20-1, 13-11) are tied for third place in the league standings.

Game 1 was a drama-filled affair, as the Eagles were down to their final out trailing 1-0. That's when senior third baseman Paige Summers came through with a two-run double to score senior right fielder Halle Dorko and freshman pinch-runner Jamie Rutherford.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Timberwolves had runners on first and third with two outs, but sophomore pitcher Laney Jones finished off the win with a strikeout.

Jones (13-8) authored a complete-game four-hitter, allowing a run and a walk and striking out three. Sophomore left fielder Emma Lawson was 2-for-2 in the Game 1 win.

Game 2 saw Ashland score twice in the top of the third on an RBI double from senior first baseman Kylie Asmus and Asmus scoring on a run-down. Asmus added another run-scoring double in the top of the fifth, then Summers launched a solo home run in the top of the seventh, her fifth of 2019.

Northwood scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but left two runners on base at the end of the game for the second time on Saturday.

Senior pitcher Hannah Stroe (13-10) went the distance, scattering eight hits, two runs and a walk and whiffing three.

Asmus was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs in the nightcap.

Ashland will conclude its 10-game road swing on Monday (April 22) at 2:30 p.m. vs. Ferris State (18-28, 9-17).
