SANDUSKY, Ohio – On Day 1 of the 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, Ashland University's softball team went 0-2 in the double-elimination tourney, losing 2-0 to Wayne State and 6-4 against Purdue Northwest.
The Eagles, ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region this week, will await a call for the D-II postseason on Monday (May 6) at 10 a.m. on NCAA.com.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
- A scoreless tie against the Warriors went to the bottom of the fifth, where Ashland had the best scoring chance to that point. A single by senior center fielder Erika Farst looked like it would give the Eagles the lead, but an 8-2 putout kept the contest scoreless.
- In the top of the seventh, Wayne State had runners on second and third with one out, and with two outs, Emma Adams brought both runners home with a single.
- In the consolation bracket against the Pride, Purdue Northwest's Amanda Noblett launched a solo home run to right field for a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. That advantage increased to 3-0 later in the second on a two-out AU error which plated two runs.
- Ashland came right back in the bottom of the second, in part thanks to three Pride errors. Farst's RBI single plated the Eagles' first run of the day, then senior right fielder Halle Dorko scored on a throwing error.
- PNW responded with another three-run inning in the top of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.
- The Eagles attempted a seventh-inning rally, scoring twice on an RBI double by junior designated hitter Dayna Denner and a run-scoring hit from sophomore shortstop Abigail Butler, but the tying runs were stranded.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
- Sophomore pitcher Laney Jones (15-11) threw 6 1/3 hitless innings against Wayne State, finishing with a two-hitter, allowing two unearned runs and two walks and striking out five. Farst was 2-for-3 against the Warriors.
- Versus the Pride, junior second baseman Camille Pollutro was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Senior pitcher Hannah Stroe (16-12) yielded six hits, six runs (four earned) and two walks and whiffed four in 3 1/3 frames, and Jones came in to toss 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.
