ASHLAND, Ohio – After one day at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in San Antonio, the Eagles are showing they belong among the best in the country.
The AU women finished Wednesday (March 9) in second place overall with 73 points overall, getting four top seven finishes in three events.
The 200 medley relay team finished in third place with a time of 1:43.14, beating its previous top time by more than three-tenths of a second. The third-place finish gave AU 32 team points. The squad consisted of freshman Sara Reidler (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln), junior Maura Anderson (Lakewood, Ohio), senior Allison Morgan (Strongsville, Ohio) and sophomore Mary Cargill (Wadsworth, Ohio).
Sophomore Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) took home the bronze medal in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.14 seconds. Also placing in that event was Morgan, who was seventh with a time of 23.37 seconds. The pair combined to collect 28 points for the Eagles.
Anderson was sixth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:04.76. She entered the event ranked 18th nationally, but beat her previous personal record by more than two full seconds to earn 13 points for Ashland.
On the men's side, the Eagles currently rank 12th in the country with three days of competition remaining.
The men's 200 medley relay team finished third for 32 team points with a time of 1:29.58. That team consisted of senior Matt Cook (Olmsted Falls, Ohio), sophomore Cheyne Fisher (Durban, South Africa/Westville), senior Brian Worhatch (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) and sophomore Tyler Bailey (Westlake, Ohio/University School).
Fisher finished 14th for AU in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:51.20.
The Eagles continue competition on Thursday (March 10), running through Saturday (March 12).
