Both Ashland University swimming teams finished in third place at the 2011 GLIAC Championships. This year's meet concluded on Saturday night (Feb. 12) in Jenison, Mich., with Wayne State winning both team titles.
In the men's race, the Warriors had 852 points. Grand Valley State was second (728) and AU was third (714).
The WSU women claimed the championship trophy with 868 points. Grand Valley State was second (736) and Ashland was third (563).
On Saturday, the AU men enjoyed a first place finish in the 200 breaststroke by sophomore Cheyne Fisher (Durban, South Africa/Westville). Fisher won the race in 1:59.29. That is a GLIAC meet record and it is an "A" cut for nationals.
Sophomore Tyler Bailey (Westlake, Ohio/University School) was the runnerup in the 100 freestyle (43.35) and sophomore Tyler Remmel (Hubertus,Wisc./Hartford Union) was third in the 200 breaststroke (2:02.68). Sophomore Mauricio Uranga (Chihuahua, Mexico/LaSalle Chihuahua) won the bronze medal in the 200 backstroke (1:50.21). He broke the GLIAC meet record and established a "B" cut for nationals.
For the women, sophomore Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) was the runnerup in the 100 freestyle (51:04). Gabriela Verduga Arzaluz (Institute Tecnologico y d Estudious Superiores de) was third (51:42). Freshman Laurin McClure (Milford, Ohio) was third in the 200 butterfly (2:08.33).
The women's 400 freestyle relay was second and hit an "A" cut with a time of 3:26.58. The members of that quartet were Widmann, Arzaluz, junior Maura Anderson (Lakewood, Ohio) and sophomore Rachael Ausdenmoore (Southlake, Texas/Carroll).
