ASHLAND, Ohio – The AU men's and women's swimming teams dominated the top two spots in several events in the second day of the GLIAC Championships in Jenison, Mich. on Thursday (Feb. 10). The Eagles broke six school records on the day.
Both the AU men's and women's teams are in third place after two of the four days of competition. The current standings are listed below.
The women's 400 medley relay team took home the gold medal with a GLIAC meet and Ashland record time of 3:45.34. That time qualifies the squad for the National Championships in March. The squad consisted of sophomore Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage), junior Maura Anderson (Lakewood, Ohio), senior Allison Morgan (Strongsville, Ohio) and freshman Gabriela Verdugo Arzaluz (Chihuahua, Mexico/Institute Tecnologico y de Estudious Superiores de). Widmann's split of 27.18 seconds in the race set a school-record.
The men's 400 medley relay squad had a near identical performance, also setting a meet and school record with a time of 3:17.75. The team consisted of senior Matt Cook (Olmsted Falls, Ohio), sophomore Cheyne Fisher (Durban, South Africa/Westville), senior Chewy Vogele (Westchester, Ohio/Lakota West) and sophomore Tyler Bailey (Westlake, Ohio/University School). Cook's split time of 24.01 seconds was a school record.
On the women's side, Widmann finished in the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.23 seconds. That won the event, set a GLIAC meet record and qualified her for the national meet. Morgan was second in the event, also qualifying for the national meet with a time of 23.53 seconds.
The women's 200 freestyle relay team finished second with an automatic qualifying time of 1:33.40. On that team was Widmann, senior Kristyn Benter (Big Prairie, Ohio/East Central), sophomore Mary Cargill (Wadsworth, Ohio) and Morgan.
Anderson finished second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.83. She is a provisional qualifier for the national meet.
On the men's side, the 200 freestyle relay team finished second with a time of 1:32.90. The team consisted of freshman Jake Miller (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), senior Chewy Vogele (Westchester, Ohio/Lakota West), Worhatch and Bailey.
Freshman Alex Sheil (Sydney, Australia/Trinity) won 500 freestyle and set a school record with a time of 4:34.87. He earned an automatic qualification to the national meet with the swim.
Fisher finished second in the 200 individual medley with a school-record time of 1:51.51. He is a national provisional qualifier.
Bailey was third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.16 seconds and is a provisional qualifier in for nationals.
