Carey Named Assistant Swimming Coach at Ashland

Ashland University has hired James Carey as an assistant swimming and diving coach.  Carey will work with both the men's and women's programs.

Carey came to AU from the University of Buffalo where he was a graduate assistant coach.  Carey started at Buffalo in September, 2009.  At Buffalo, he helped develop season plans for the middle distance group, planned and directed dry land workouts, assisted in recruiting and was responsible for video analysis and technical stroke instruction.  Buffalo won the Mid-American Conference team championship in 2011 and that team established six conference records and 41 school marks.

Carey's background also includes a stint as the head coach for the Nickel City Splash Master's swimming program. He was responsible for writing practice plans for that group and he managed the financial and membership responsibilities of the team.  This program included over 80 team members.

The new AU assistant coach also served as a student assistant coach at Ohio University (2008-09) and the head coach of the OU's master's swimming program (2007-08).

Carey is a 2009 Ohio University graduate.  He was a two-time letterman in swimming and was part of two MAC championship teams (2006, 2007).  In 2007, Carey received the Tad Potter Award for Sportsmanship.
