Grand Valley Swimmers Sweep Eagles

            Both Ashland University swimming teams came up on the short end of the score on Saturday (Oct. 29) against Grand Valley State at Messerly Natatorium.

            The GVSU women defeated the Eagles, 152-88. The Laker men left campus with a 154-88 victory.

            For the AU women, junior Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) took top honors in the 50 (24.03) and 100 freestyle (52.74).  Widmann was also part of the 400 medley relay that finished first in 3:59.66. Senior Maura Anderson (Lakewood, Ohio) won the 200 IM (2:12.27) and was part of the 400 medley relay.

            The AU men got a gold medal from junior Cheyne Fisher (Durban, South Africa/Westville) in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.59). The 400 free relay won in 3:14.33. That quartet consisted of freshman Ben May (Noblesville, Ind.), junior Mauricio Uranga (Chihuahua, Mexico/La Salle Chihuahua), sophomore Jacob Miller (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard-Davidson) and sophomore Hueston Holder (Brooklyn, Iowa/Brooklyn-Guerney-Malcom).

            The Ashland men are 2-1 and the AU women are 0-3. Both teams return to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 5, when they host Indianapolis at 1 p.m.
