Bad luck on Friday the 13th? Not for the Ashland University swimming and diving teams.
The AU tankers gave an impressive performance Friday (Jan. 13) in their final home meet of the season. The Eagles competed against Malone and Lake Erie and spent a good portion of the night on top of the awards stand.
For the women, junior Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) finished first in the 50 freestyle (23.83) and 100 backstroke (58.41). She was part of the 200 medley relay that was first in 1:49.67 and the 200 free relay that won gold in 1:37.66.
Senior Maura Anderson (Lakewood, Ohio) led the pack in the 50 breaststroke (31.31) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.78). She was also on the 200 medley relay.
Gabriela Verdugo-Arzaluz (Chihuahua, Mexico/Institute Technologico y de Estudious Superiores de) was first in the 50 butterfly (27.17) and 100 freestyle (55.28). Junior Nicole Buhr (Milford, Ohio) was first in the 1- and 3-meter diving events.
For the men, junior Mauricio Uranga (Chihuahua, Mexico/LaSalle Chihuahua) was first in the 50 backstroke (24.43) and 100 backstroke (52.21). He was part of the 200 medley relay that led the field in 1:34.59. Freshman Steve Moss (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) was first in the 50 butterfly (24.31) and 100 freestyle (47.28). Sophomore Josiah Galat (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) was first in the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions.
Prior to the start of the meet, the seniors on this year's AU team were honored.
No team scores were kept with this meet.
Ashland returns to the pool on Jan. 20 at Oakland University. Kenyon and Cincinnati will also swim at Oakland.
