The Ashland University swimming and diving teams got their seasons started in impressive fashion on Friday (Oct. 12) at Messerly Natatorium with a pair of victories over Findlay.
The AU women prevailed, 154-137 and the Eagle men won, 182-56.
For the women, freshman Hannah Mattar (Lake Orion, Mich.) won gold in the 1000 freestyle (11:02.39), 200 breaststroke (2:27.39) and 200 IM (2:12.87). She was part of the 200 free relay that finished first in 1:37.32 and the 200 medley relay that was first in 1:46.75.
Freshman Kaylyn Murphy (West Carollton, Ohio) was first in the 200 freestyle (1:54.60) and 100 freestyle (52.60). She was also on the 200 medley relay.
Senior Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) was first in the 50 freestyle (23.55) and 200 backstroke (2:09.64). Widmann was on the victorious 200 free relay and 200 medley relay.
For the men, junior Braxton Wright (Lexington, Ohio) led the field in the 50 freestyle (21:05) and 100 freestyle (46.70). He was on the first place 200 free relay (1:23.94).
Sophomore Lukas Jachno (Jindrichuv Hradec, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Olympjskych Nadeji) was first in the 200 butterfly (1:58.51) and 500 freestyle (4:49.67). Junior Alex Sheil (Sydney, Australia/Trinity) won the 100 butterfly (51:08) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.69). Senior Mauricio Uranga (Chihuahua, Mexico/La Salle Chihuahua) was first in the 100 backstroke (52.94) and 200 backstroke (1:55.24).
