The Ashland University swimming and diving teams concluded a busy weekend on Saturday (Oct. 27) at Grand Valley State. One day after competing at Bowling Green, the Eagles absorbed a pair of losses against the Lakers.
The GVSU men prevailed, 132-109. The Laker women won, 134-103.
The AU women received noteworthy performances from several youngsters. Freshman Hannah Matter (Lake Orion, Mich.) finished first in the 1000 freestyle (11:03.16), 500 freestyle (5:24.62) and 200 breaststroke (2:28.36). Another freshman, Kaylyn Murphy (West Carrollton, Ohio/West Carrollton), won gold in the 100 freestyle (53.46) and 200 freestyle (1:57.10). Freshman Beth Long (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) led the field in the 200 IM (2:16.39) and was on the 400 free relay that won in 3:37.50.
Senior Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) was first in the 50 freestyle (24.25). She was also on the victorious 400 free relay.
For the men, junior Alex Sheil (Sydney, Australia/Trinity) earned two individual wins. He set the pace in the 200 IM (1:58.39) and 500 freestyle (4:48.00). Sheil was also on the 400 medley relay that finished first in 3:27.41.
Senior Mauricio Uranga (Chihuahua, Mexico/La Salle Chihuahua) finished first in the 200 backstroke (1:54.73) and was part of the first place 400 medley. Sophomore Steve Moss (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) was on the 400 medley and the first place 400 free relay (3:08.97).
