The Ashland University swimming and diving teams will not compete again at Messerly Natatorium until Jan. 12. On Saturday (Nov. 17) at the AU Invitational, the Eagles gave their fans some positives that they can remember until the next home meet comes around.
On Saturday, the swimmers set three school records. The second NCAA "A" cut of the weekend was also recorded.
The NCAA berth was wrapped up by senior Cheyne Fisher (Durban, South Africa/Westville) in the 200 breaststroke. His time was 1:58.69. On Friday, senior Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) made the NCAA cut in the 50 freestyle. Widmann has won a national championship each of the last three years.
On Saturday, junior Sara Reidler (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna-Lincoln) won the gold medal and set a school record in the 200 backstroke (2:03.77).
In the 200 butterfly, junior Laurin McClure (Milford, Ohio) set a school record (2:08.34). She was second in the race.
The men's 400 free relay established a school record (3:01.47). That quartet included juniors Alex Sheil (Sydney, Australia/Trinity), Jonny Kleinhenz (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) and Braxton Wright (Lexington, Ohio), plus senior Tyler Remmel (Hubertus, Wis./Hertford-Union).
