The AU swimming and diving team wasted little time picking up where it left off before the semester break. Wednesday (Jan. 2) at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio, both AU teams posted wins over Malone. The AU men won, 183-66 and the Ashland women cruised to a 171-67 triumph.
This pool will be the site of this year's GLIAC Championships, which AU will host Feb. 7-9.
From the looks of things, the Eagles should be very comfortable in these surroundings. On Wednesday, senior Cheyne Fisher (Durban, South Africa/Westville) won the 100 breaststroke (59.09) and 200 breaststroke (2:09.48). He was also part of the 200 medley relay that finished first (1:35.84). Senior Mauricio Uranga (Chihuahua, Mexico/La Salle Chihuahua) joined Fisher on that victorious relay and also finished first in the 100 backstroke (53.36) and 200 IM (1:59.69). Sophomore Lukas Jachno (Jindrichuv Hardec, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Olympijskych Nadeji) won the 1000 freestyle (10:11.12) and 500 freestyle (4:53.32), plus the 200 butterfly (2:01.50).
Junior Braxton Wright (Lexington, Ohio) won the 100 freestyle (48.20) and was on the 200 medley. Senior Tyler Remmel (Hubertus, Wis./Hertford Union) led the field in the 100 butterfly (52.39) and junior Alex Sheil (Sydney, Australia/Trinity) set the pace in the 200 freestyle (1:43.99).
Sophomore Colin MacDonald (East Lansing, Mich.) was first in the 1-meter (196.35) and 3-meter (210.90) diving.
For the women, freshman Kaylyn Murphy (West Carrollton, Ohio) won the 200 freestyle (1:59.34) 50 freestyle (24.77) and 100 freestyle (54.00). Senior Nicole Buhr (Milford, Ohio) won 1-meter (189.60) and the 3-meter diving (153.90). Senior Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) was first in the 100 backstroke (58.07) and was part of the 200 medley relay that finished first (1:53.14). Freshman Beth Long (Upper Arlington, Ohio) won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.69) wnd was on the 200 medley relay.
Junior Sara Reidler (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) was first in the 200 backstroke (2:16.41) and was on the 200 medley.
