Both Ashland University swimming and diving teams picked up wins on Friday night (Jan. 11) at Messerly Natatorium against Lake Erie. The AU women won, 175-79 and the Ashland men left the pool with a 178-68 triumph.
For the women, freshman Hannah Mattar (Lake Orion, Mich.) won gold in three events. She was first in the 200 butterfly (2:16.68), 200 breaststroke (2:28.62) and 200 IM (2:15.99).
Senior Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) led the pack in the 100 backstroke (58.07) and 100 freestyle (54.17). She was part of the 400 free relay (3:39.24) that finished first.
For the men, sophomore Lukas Jachno (Jindrichuv Hradec, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Olympijskych Nadeji) came home first in the 1000 freestyle (9:52.82) and 200 butterfly (2:00.81). Junior Alex Sheil (Sydney, Australia/Trinity) won the 200 freestyle (1:44.40) and 500 freestyle (4:47.59) and was on the 400 free relay (3:08.72) that claimed the top finish.
Senior Mauricio Uranga (Chihuahua, Mexico/La Salle Chihuahua) was the top finisher in the 100 backstroke (52.21) and 200 backstroke (1:55.26). Senior Cheyne Fisher (Durban, South Africa/Westville) led the field in the 100 breaststroke (58.56) and 200 breaststroke (2:09.60).
Junior Braxton Wright (Lexington, Ohio) earned first place finishes in the 50 freestyle (21.32) and 100 freestyle (47.67). He was on the 400 free relay (3:08.72) that won the gold medal.
The Eagles will host Urbana on Saturday (Jan. 12, 1 p.m.). That is Senior Day.
