Two Ashland University relays won GLIAC championships on Thursday (Feb. 7) at 2012-13 conference championships. This year's event is being held at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio.
The women's 200 free relay finished first in 1:33.86. That quartet consisted of freshman Kaylyn Murphy (West Carrollton, Ohio), junior Gabriela Verdugo-Arzaluz (Chihuahua, Mexico/Institute Technologico y de Estudious Superiores de) and seniors Rachael Ausdenmoore (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) and Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage).
The men's 200 free relay led the field with a time of 1:21.39. The members of that unit were freshman Alex Mathews (Cary, N.C./Green Hope), sophomore Steve Moss (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) and juniors Jacob Miller (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Braxton Wright (Lexington, Ohio).
Widmann was second in the 50 freestyle (23.38) and senior Cheyne Fisher (Durban, South Africa/Westville) was third in the 200 IM (1:52.32).
After two days of competition, the AU men are fourth with 223.5 points. Wayne State (294) is first, Grand Valley State (252) is second and Indianapolis (247) is third.
The Ashland women are sixth with 137 points. Wayne State (345.5) sits in first place in the team standings.
The GLIAC championships run through Saturday (Feb. 9).
