The Ashland University swimming and diving program got two first place finishes on Saturday (Feb. 9), the final day of the 2013 GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
In the men's 200 breaststroke, senior Cheyne Fisher (Durban, South Africa/Westville) hit the "A" standard with a finish of 1:59.19. That also broke the GLIAC mark he set in 2011 - 1:59.29.
Freshman Hannah Mattar (Lake Orion, Ohio) led the pack in the women's 200 breaststroke. She won the first GLIAC championship of her career in 2:18.18.
Freshman Alex Mathews (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle (45.56). Mathews was part of the 400 free relay that was third (3:02.01). He was joined in that race by senior Tyler Remmel (Hubertus, Wis./Hertford Union), junior Braxton Wright (Lexington, Ohio) and sophomore Steve Moss (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman).
Senior Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) was third in the 100 freestyle (51.29). Widmann was part of the women's 400 free relay that was second (3:28.42). The other members of that quartet were juniors Gabriela Verdugo-Arzaluz (Chihuahua, Mexico/Institute Technologica y de Estudious Superiores de) and Sara Reidler (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) and freshman Kaylyn Murphy (West Carrollton, Ohio).
The AU men were fourth. Wayne State had 780 points to win the championship. Grand Valley State (763.5) was second and Indianapolis (559.5) was third. AU had 557.5 points.
Wayne State won the women's crown with 861.5 points. The Eagles were sixth with 338.5 points.
