AU senior Julie Widmann (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) finished second in the 100 backstroke on Friday (Mar. 8) at the NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships in Birmingham, Ala.
Widmann has four national championships in her collegiate career and she didn't miss adding a fifth gold medal by much on Friday. She completed the race in 54.42. Bente Heller of Alaska-Fairbanks won in 54.26. Last spring, Widmann won a national championship in this event.
AU senior Cheyne Fisher (Durban, South Africa/Westville) got the AU men's swimmers some points on Friday by placing 12th in the 100 breaststroke. His time was 55.36.
After three days of competition, the AU women are in 12th place with 114 points. Drury (295.5) is first and Wayne State (276) is second.
On the men's side, Drury leads with 398 points and Florida Southern is second with 274 points. Incarnate Word is third with 272 points. Ashland is tied for 24th place with 14 points.
Saturday (Mar. 9) is the final day of the championships.
