Ashland University women's basketball player Kari Daugherty (Fresno,Ohio/Dayton) is one of six female student-athletes to receive a GLIAC Meijer Commissioner's Award for the Winter, 2013 season. Swimmer Tyler Remmel (Hubertus, Wis./Hertford Union) is one of six male student-athletes to be recognized.
These awards are presented at the conclusion of the each sports season. They recognize excellence in the classroom and the field of play. The GLIAC announced the awards this week (June 5).
Daugherty, a senior, led the Eagles to a 2013 national championship. She averaged 22.3 ppg., and 13.7 rpg. Daugherty is a two-time NCAA Division II national player of the year. She is also a two-time GLIAC player of the year, Midwest Region player of the year and Basketball Bulletin player of the year. Daugherty was named the Most Outstanding Player at this year's Elite Eight.
With Daugherty in the lineup, AU made two consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II national title game in San Antonio. Daugherty led the country in double-doubles this season and is the all-time NCAA Division II leader in consecutive double-doubles.
The guard-forward is just as accomplished in the classroom. Daugherty is the owner of a 3.97 grade point average. She is a middle childhood education and in 2012-13 was named the Capital One Women's Basketball Academic All-American of the year. Daugherty was also a first team Capital One Academic All-American.
Remmel was a regular at nationals throughout his career. A four-year starter, the senior was a 10-time All0-American. Remmel also competed in the 100 breaststroke at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials.
In 2011-12, Remmel was recognized as a Capital One Second Team Academic All-American. He has a 3.84 grade point average and is a Journalism/English major. His minor is sports communication.
Daugherty and Remmel are the third and fourth Ashland student-athletes to receive a Commissioner's Award this year. In the fall, football's Donnie Dottei and volleyball's Brittany Snider were honored. The spring awards have not been announced.
