Freshman Philipp Sikatzki and sophomore Hannah Mattar won GLIAC championships on Thursday (Feb. 13) at the 2014 GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships in Geneva, Ohio. This was the second title in two days for Sikatzki.
Thursday, Sikatzki led the way in the 100 butterfly. He completed the race in 47.24. That's a GLIAC record and it is an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships. The NCAA meet, like this week's GLIAC meet, will take place in Geneva at the SPIRE Institute.
Mattar won the 400 IM in 4:21.04. That's also a conference record and a "B"cut for nationals.
Both of Ashland's 200 free relays turned in strong performances. The women were second in 1:34.42, which hits the B standard. That relay consisted of Kaylyn Murphy, Anna Evans, Gabriela Verdugo-Arzaluz and Sara Reidler.
The men's 200 free relay was the runner-up in 1:21.42. That's also a B cut. Sikatzki, Sergio Sanchis Peris, Hueston Holder and Jacob Miller made up this quartet.
The men's 400 medley relay was third in 3:17.02. Peris, Sikatzki, Sheil and Greg Walters were in that race. The time hits the B standard.
This was the second day of competition. On the men's side, Wayne State (463) sits in first place, Grand Valley State (437.5) is second and Ashland (248.5) is third.
The AU women are tied for fourth place. Wayne State (458) is first and Grand Valley State (332) is second.
