The AU men's and women's swimming and diving teams collected two more first place finishes on Friday (Feb. 14) at the GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships in Geneva, Ohio.
Freshman Philipp Sikatzki finished first in the 100 backstroke. Sikatzki finished in 47.10, which is a meet record and an automatic qualification for the NCAA Division II championship meet. This was the freshman's third gold medal of the week.
Senior Alex Sheil led the field in the 500 freestyle. His time was 4:31.58. That meets the B standard for nationals.
The AU women posted a pair of third place finishes. Senior Sara Reidler was third in the 100 backstroke. She completed the race in 56.66 and that time hits the B standard.
Sophomore Hannah Mattar was third in the 100 breaststroke. Her time was 1:03.43, good enough to hit the B standard.
Sergio Sanchis Peris was fourth in the 100 backstroke and reached the provisional list with a time of 49.16.
The men's 800 free relay was the runner-up in 6:49.88. The women's 800 free relay was third in 7:44.80. Both of those times were provisional qualifications.
The AU men are fourth in a field of seven teams and the Ashland women are in fourth place out of 10 teams. The Wayne State men and women are in first place and Grand Valley State is second in both sides of the bracket.
The GLIAC Championships will conclude with a full day of action on Saturday (Feb. 15). The meet is being held at the SPIRE Institute.
