Eagle Men, Women Handle the Storm, Claim GLIAC Victories

The Ashland University swim and dive teams both defeated the Lake Erie College Storm on Friday evening at Messerly Natatorium.

The men handled the Storm, 104-68, and the women won, 99-41.

The Eagles saw many dominating performances on the evening coming from both the men and women. Hannah Mattar took first place in the 1,650-yard freestyle by a full minute and a half. She clocked in at 18:16.54.

Ryan Deemer also claimed victory on the men's side in the 1,650 free. He touched in 16:49.74.

The evening was capped off with the thrilling 200 free relays. The women's combo of Zoe Scarpone, Paige Martin, Katherine Randall and Courtney Patterson finished the race with a time of 1:45.93. The Storm finished second in a time of 1:49.13.

The AU men made the 200 free relay a nail-biter. The quartet of Nicholas Noe, Joshua Nixon, Logan Rex and Matthew Wilcox rallied late to nip Lake Erie by five hundredths of a second. Ashland finished the relay in 1:28.41 seconds. Lake Erie's men clocked in at 1:28.46.

The Eagles claimed first in 19 of the 26 events in the meet.

Ashland will return to Messerly Natatorium on Saturday (Jan. 10) to play host to the Urbana Blue Knights. The meet will get underway at 1 p.m.
