The Ashland University swimming and diving teams saw two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes in Hillsdale, Mich., on Saturday (Jan. 16).
The Eagle men fell 159-129 to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals. The Eagle women also fell shy to the Cardinals, 160-133, and the Hillsdale Chargers, 156-106.
However, the scoreboard did not reflect the great day many Eagles had in the water.
Sophomore Ryan Deemer paced the field in the men's 1,000-meter freestyle for an Eagle victory in 9:52.69.
Senior Kaylyn Murphy continued her hot streak after earning GLIAC female athlete of the week honors for the week of Jan. 11. She took home first-place finishes in three events - the 50 free (24.64), 100 free (53.62) and the 200 free (1:56.49).
Senior Hannah Mattar notched a first-place finish in the 400 individual medley, recording a time of 4:38.32.
Sophomore Christopher Georgiadis touched first in the 200 butterfly, timing in at 1:57.78.
Senior Sergio Sanchis Peris had two winning times. Sanchis Peris won the 100 back in 55.62 seconds, and the 200 back in 2:04.23.
The Eagles will now look forward to the GLIAC Championships, beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 10 in Waterford Township, Mich. The four-day event will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 13.
