The 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships got underway on Wednesday (Feb. 10) at Waterford Mott High School in Waterford Township, Mich., and Ashland University saw six individual swimmers make the finals – tied for third-most behind Wayne State and Grand Valley State.
Senior Hannah Mattar took fifth in the women's 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.13. That time is an NCAA championships provisional mark.
Three Eagles made it to the finals of women's 50 freestyle, paced by senior Kaylyn Murphy, who won bronze after finishing in a three-way tie and crossing in 23.89 seconds (NCAA "B" cut time), and sophomore Grace Reichard, who was seventh (24.23).
The AU men's 200 medley relay team of senior Sergio Sanchis Peris, junior Greg Walters and freshmen Keegan Goeke and Ben Keilholz took third in 1:32.70, and the women's 200 medley relay quartet of junior Megan Schultz, Mattar, senior Paige Martin and freshman Julia Grady was seventh in 1:49.86.
In the men's 50 free, Sanchis Peris got on the podium in eighth place with a time of 21.48 seconds.
Ashland's men and women each are in sixth place through the first day of competition.
The Eagles will be back in the water on Thursday (Feb. 11) in Day 2 of the GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The day will begin at 10 a.m.
