At the end of its first day of competition this season on Friday (Sept. 30), the Ashland University men's and women's swimming teams both sit in third place at the two-day fall invitational in which they are hosting Findlay, Northern Michigan and Tiffin.
AU is competing under new head coach Ron Allen for the first time. Allen began at Ashland on Monday (Sept. 26).
Through 30 events that were split into two parts of the day, the Eagle men have 490.5 points, 455.5 behind the first-place Wildcats, 24 behind the second-place Oilers and 199.5 ahead of the last-place Dragons.
The Ashland women have 431.5 points, 365 less than first-place Northern Michigan, 239.5 less than second-place Findlay and 234.5 ahead of last-place Tiffin.
In the first two heats of the day, the Eagles' men and women 200-yard freestyle relay teams finished in second with times of 1:27.68 and 1:41.04, respectively. The women's team featured juniors Grace Reichard and Zoe Scarpone, as well as sophomore Julia Grady and freshman Rebecca Prexta. The men's team was comprised of senior John Scalli, junior Joshua Nixon and sophomores Ben Keilholz and Keegan Goeke.
Also during the first portion of the day, Scarpone finished in third place in the women's 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:15.68.
Keilholz and Scalli placed fourth and fifth in the men's 50-yard freestyle with marks of 22.14 and 22.62.
During the second part of the day, Scalli, Keilholz, sophomore Daniel Callis and freshman Charlie Sutton teamed up to place third in the men's 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 1:39.46.
Scarpone notched another top-three finish, coming in at second in the women's 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.25.
Sutton came in third with a time of 52.44 in the men's 100-yard butterfly.
UP NEXT: The Eagles and their competition begin Day 2 at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 1).
