Ashland Women Place Third, Men Fourth At EMU Invite

Neither Ashland University swim team moved up or down at Day 2 of the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 3).

Following 40 events, the men placed fourth in a six-team field, and the women finished third of five.

With a score of 442.5, the Eagle men were slotted 289.5 points behind third-place Ball State and 232.5 points ahead of fifth-place Tiffin. AU's women, scoring 544, finished 380 points back of second-place Wayne State and 265 points in front of the Dragons.

Having success individually on Day 2 for the Ashland women was junior Grace Reichard, who placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.87.

For the men, sophomore Daniel Callis earned seventh in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:00.04. Junior Ryan Deemer also placed seventh with a time of 4:54.19 in the 500 free.

In the Day 2 relays, AU's women's 200 free team of Reichard, freshman Rebecca Prexta, sophomore Julia Grady and senior Megan Schultz finished fifth in 1:41.74. The Eagles' men's 800 free team of Deemer and freshmen Aaron Bradfield, Malcolm Doepke and Charles Sutton finished in 7:16.55 to place fifth. And another Ashland men's 200 free team featuring Sutton, senior John Scalli and sophomores Keegan Goeke and Ben Keilholz earned fifth with a time of 1:27.68.

This was Ashland's first meet of the 2016-17 season that included Division I teams. EMU took first in the men's and women's competition, while Wright State finished last in both, only featuring swimmers in select events. Ball State only competed in the men's.

UP NEXT: This was AU's last test of 2016, as the men and women's next meet is on Jan. 13 at 5 p.m. at Malone against the Pioneers and Urbana.
