Junior Ryan Deemer, sophomore Daniel Callis and freshman Malcolm Doepke all reached the podium for the second time this week for the Ashland University men's swim team on the final day of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships in Saginaw, Mich., on Saturday (Feb. 11).

Deemer had the top finish of the week for the men's team on Day 4, taking fifth place in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:06.22. Deemer's time is good for a "B" cut standard for men's Division II nationals. He's the first Ashland men's swimmer to earn a "B" cut this season.

Doepke, also in the 1,650 free, finished seventh with a time of 16:11.27. In the 200 breaststroke, Callis earned his second seventh-place finish of 2017 GLIACs, touching the wall in 2:02.98.

For the Eagle women, junior Grace Reichard just missed taking a spot on the podium in the 200 breaststroke, finishing ninth in 2:20.68.

In the women's 400 free relay, the Ashland team of juniors Reichard and Zoe Scarpone, as well as sophomore Julia Grady and freshman Rebecca Prexta, finished sixth in 3:35.10.

The men's 400 free team featured one swimmer from each class. Senior John Scalli, junior Nicholas Noe, sophomore Ben Keilholz and freshman Charlie Sutton completed the race in 3:09.28 for sixth place.

As for the final team standings, the Eagle men came in sixth, 90.5 points ahead of seventh-place Findlay and 53 points behind fifth-place Tiffin. The Ashland women placed eighth, 21.5 points behind the seventh-place Dragons.
