Eagles Win Four Events in Final Meet of 2017

The Ashland University swimming & diving teams competed in their final competition before taking four weeks off for Christmas break by welcoming Division I Cleveland State to Messerly Natatorium on Saturday (Dec. 9) afternoon.

The Eagles won four individual events in the dual meet with senior Grace Reichard claiming the top spot in two races and freshman Dylan Nasser and junior Daniel Callis each picking up wins.

Cleveland State won the meet with the women taking a 182-90 decision and the men winning by a 176-105 margin.

For the men, Nasser earned the victory in the 200 backstroke, swimming the race in 1:55.70. Junior Keegan Goeke also placed in the top three in the event with a time of 2:03.63. Nasser and Goeke also finished second and third, respectively in the 100 backstroke.

Callis' win came in the 200 breaststroke as the Eagles took the top two spots in the heat. Callis touched the pad at 2:13.67, while junior Matthew Bernsdorf clocked in at 2:18.63.

Nasser was also second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:59.21 while senior Christopher Georgiadis was third with a time of 2:00.11. Georgiadis was also second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.86.  

Callis was second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.40 while sophomore Grant Stahl was third at 1:02.30.

Senior Josh Nixon and sophomore Aaron Bradfield were second and third, respectively, in the 100 butterfly with Nixon timing in at 55.79 seconds. Bradfield was a half-second behind at 56.28.

In the 500 freestyle, senior Ryan Deemer placed second with a time of 4:59.79 while freshman Kyle Feuerstine was third at 5:09.17.

The Eagles also had two of the top three in the 100 freestyle as junior Ben Keilholz was second (50.30 seconds) and senior Nick Noe was third (51.31).

Deemer (1000 freestyle), Noe (200 freestyle) and Nixon (50 freestyle) each also had third place finishes on Saturday.

Nixon, Keilholz, Noe and Stahl combined to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.19. Nasser, Callis, Goeke and Keilholz comprised the 200 medley relay squad that clocked in at 1:37.47 for third place.

For the women's team, Reichard took the top spot in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:56.63. She was also first in the 100 freestyle, touching the pad in 53.56 seconds. Freshman Maura Delaney was third in that race.

Senior Zoe Scarpone had a pair of second place finishes in the 100 butterfly (1:03.68) and 200 individual medley (2:22.00). Grady was third in the 100 butterfly and junior Destiny Camp was third in the 200 IM.

Junior Julia Grady came in second place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.65 seconds. In the 200 breaststroke, junior Sophie Brightman was second (2:39.71) and Camp was third (2:42.54).

The Eagles also placed two in the top three in the 500 freestyle with junior Erin Staley taking second (5:33.68) and senior Maddie Olander finishing third (5:40.56). Staley was also third in the 1000 freestyle (11:18.35).

Senior Courtney Patterson had two top-three finishes, coming in second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:29.55 and third in the 100 backstroke at 1:08.58.

Sophomore Maddy Cronin was second both the 1-meter (151.28) and 3-meter (144.00) diving events.

Grady, Reichard, Brightman and Delaney also combined to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.16.

The Eagles now have a four-week break before returning to the pool competitively on Jan. 5 for a dual at Catawba.
