Eagles Wrap Southern Training Trip With Meet at Catawba

On the way back from their weeklong training trip to Florida, the Ashland University men's and women's swimming & diving teams made a stop at Catawba College for a meet with the Indians in North Carolina on Friday (Jan. 5) night.

The AU men came away victorious by a 117-84 margin while the women fell narrowly, 102-95.

The Eagles won 10 events on the night, five on the men's side and five on the women's.

Senior Ryan Deemer took home two top finishes, leading the field in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:57.44. He was also the fastest in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 4:51.18.

Freshman Dylan Nasser finished first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.79.

The Eagles had the top three finishers in the 100 freestyle, led by junior Ben Keilholz, who clocked in at 50.16 seconds. Seniors Josh Nixon (50.68) and Nick Noe (52.55) were second and third, respectively.

The group of Nixon, senior Keegan Goeke, Keilholz and sophomore Grant Stahl won the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:20.39.

For the women, senior Grace Reichard was a two-time winner on Friday night. She took the top spot in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.45 and also touched the pad first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.15 seconds.

Junior Julia Grady won the 50 freestyle by clocking in at 25.61 seconds, while junior Erin Staley was fastest in the 500 freestyle at 5:29.10.

Grady, Reichard, freshman Jessica Kaper and senior Zoe Scarpone combined to win the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:43.92.

The Eagles will have a day to finish their trip back to Ashland before returning to the Messerly Natatorium for a dual meet with Tiffin on Sunday (Jan. 7) at 3 p.m.
