Four Individuals Finish Top 8 On Friday

The Ashland University men's and women's swimming & diving teams had four athletes reach the podium in individual events on Friday (Feb. 16) – the third day of competition in the GLIAC Championships at the Jenison High School Aquatics Center.

Both teams remain in fifth place entering the final day of competition.

Junior Daniel Callis was the top finisher for the Eagles on Friday, placing fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.75 seconds. He missed a "B" cut by just 0.19 seconds. Junior Matthew Bernsdorf (13th) and sophomore Grant Stahl (14th) also scored in the event.

Sophomore Malcolm Doepke finished seventh in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:39.99. Senior Nick Noe was 14th in the race.

Senior Christopher Goergiadis reached the podium in the 200 butterfly with an eighth-place finish in the 200 butterfly. He clocked in at 1:53.69. Sophomore Aaron Bradfield was 15th in the 200 butterfly.

On the men's side, freshman Dylan Nasser, junior Ben Keilholz and junior Keegan Goeke all scored in the 100 backstroke.

The Eagles were fifth in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 6:57.43. The team consisted of Nasser, Doepke, senior Ryan Deemer and Georgiadis.

For the women, senior Grace Reichard was the highest placer, coming in seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.85 – just 0.20 seconds off the NCAA "B" standard. Juniors Sophie Brightman and Destiny Camp also scored for Ashland in the event.

Junior Erin Staley (500 freestyle, 13th) and freshman Jessica Zaper (100 backstroke 14th) also scored on Friday.

Staley, Brightman, freshman Marissa Kassinger and senior Maddie Olander finished fifth in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 8:13.20.

The GLIAC Championships will conclude on Saturday (Feb. 17) with the 1,650 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay.
