Longtime Coach, Innovator Maglischo To Present at Ashland

The Ashland University swimming & diving program will welcome long-time swimming coach and innovator Dr. Ernest Maglischo to campus as a special presenter and instructor Sept. 14-16 at the AU Rec Center.

Maglischo was a swimming coach for 38 years, working at four universities and two swim clubs. He is the only coach to have won NCAA championships at three universities. He was named the Pacific 10 Conference Coach of the Year and was the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year eight times. He has also earned the renowned National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy.

"The Ashland University swimming & diving program is extremely fortunate to welcome Dr. Ernest Maglischo for a clinic in September," said AU head coach Ron Allen. "I had the amazing experience of working with Ernie for the 1990-91 Cal State Bakersfield men's program and cannot tell you how much I was able to learn that year as the program won its sixth straight national championship. No one had ever told me how much science was involved in our sport and have considered that experience as shaping my coaching philosophy over the years."

The clinic will feature several classroom and in-pool sessions that will cover each individual stroke and training practices.

Swimming coaches at all levels are invited to participate in all or part of these sessions for a fee. Coaches interested in participating should contact Allen at rallen9@ashland.edu or 419-289-5445.

Maglischo holds a Ph.D. in exercise physiology from the Ohio State University. He is a member of the College Swimming Coaches Assocation, the American Swimming Coaches Association and USA Swimming where he serves on the sports medicine committee. Now retired, the Massillon, Ohio native resides in Phoenix, Ariz.

"A large part of my coaching success is due to what I have learned over the years from Ernie," said Allen. "I consider him to be a mentor and am honored to have him back in this region of Ohio where he was born and raised."

Maglischo's book, "Swimming Even Faster," was released in 1993 and is the comprehensive swimming book. It was updated in 2003 with the release of "Swimming Fastest." Maglischo has published six books on the sport of swimming with well over 1,000 pages dedicated to the physiology and biomechanics of the sport in just the last two volumes.
