Ashland University's men's and woman's swimming and diving teams competed in the second day of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday (Feb. 21) at Cleveland State.
Freshman Matt Filsinger was the star of the day for Ashland. He qualified for the finals of the men's 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:02.23, the fifth-best in the prelims. In the finals, Filsinger finished in 4:02.94 to secure a seventh-place finish. His time is good enough for fifth-best in Ashland's history.
The men's 200 free relay also earned a big result. The foursome of senior Ben Keilholz, senior Keegan Goeke, junior Grant Stahl and freshman Jacob Keilholz finished in 1:23.80 to earn fourth place in the event.
In the 200 free, senior Lucas Oliveira finished in 10th. His finals time of 1:41.53 was good enough for second in his heat. Goeke qualified for the finals in 100 fly action. His prelim time was 50.89, and he improved slightly in the finals, a 50.80, to finish 12th in the event.
In the 400 medley relay, Goeke, senior Daniel Callis, Stahl and Keilholz finished fifth with a time of 3:32.74.
Ashland's women also had a strong showing at the second day of the GLIAC Championships. Freshman Abigail Ellsworth earned a 10th-place finish in the 200 free. She qualified with a time of 1:55.34, and her finals time was 1:54.61. Sophomore Anne Evans qualified for the finals in the 100 butterfly with a qualifying time of 59.70. She improved on that time in the finals to earn 13th place with a 59.28 finish.
The women's 400 medley relay comprised of Ellsworth, senior Sophie Brightman, Evans and senior Julia Grady finished fifth with a time of 3:59.60.
At the halfway point, Ashland's men sit in fifth place with a score of 148, and the women sit in sixth place with 122 points.
Day 3 action in Cleveland will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday (Feb. 22).
