The Ashland University swimming and diving teams concluded action at the GLIAC Championships on Saturday (Feb. 23) night at the Busbey Natatorium in Cleveland.
The AU men's team finished the meet in fifth place overall with a team score of 283, while the women were sixth overall with a team score of 247.
The Eagles had their most impressive showings in Saturday's distance race as freshman Franci Aleksi paced three AU swimmers in the 1,650 freestyle finals. His time of 15:51.15 was good for fourth place, while senior Lucas Oliveira was seventh in the event, clocking in at 15:57.46. Both those times were good enough for NCAA "B" cuts. Freshman Matthew Filsinger was 13th in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:17.82.
Elsewhere for the men, senior Daniel Callis finished 14th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.91.
The men's 400 freestyle relay team of senior Ben Keilholz, senior Keegan Goeke, junior Grant Stahl and Oliveira came in fifth place with a time of 3:07.06.
The top individual finish for the women on Saturday came in the 200 backstroke as freshman Michaela Godfrey placed ninth with a time of 2:04.79.
Freshman Abigail Ellsworth (53.48 seconds) and senior Julia Grady (53.49 seconds) finished 11th and 12th in the 100 freestyle, respectively.
In the 1,650 freestyle, sophomore Tara Stevens clocked in at 17:50.19 to finish in 12th place. Senior Erin Staley was 14th in the event with a time of 18:01.06.
Junior Madeline Cronin was 14th in the 3-meter diving event with 252.45 points, and sophomore Brenda Neves was 16th in the 200 breaststroke, touching the pad in 2:31.19.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Grady, Ellsworth, Stevens and Staley came in sixth place, clocking in at 3:34.04.
Grand Valley State won the team titles on both the men's and women's sides.
