AU Men, Women In Second At Oberlin

Ashland University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded action on Day 2 at the Oberlin Invitational on Saturday (Nov. 23).

In women's action, there were a few event winners.

The 400-yard medley relay team of sophomore Michaela Godfrey, freshman Gabby Bess, freshman Makayla Tarkenton, and sophomore Abigail Ellsworth won their race in 3:56.18. Junior Tara Stevens kept her momentum from Friday (Nov. 22) night going, picking up a win in the 500 freestyle finals (5:09.30). Tarkenton won an event as well, the 100 breaststroke (1:05.77). Godfrey won the 200 backstroke for the Eagles, finishing in 2:05.67.

Also finishing with high placing on the women's side was the 200 free relay team comprised of freshman Sydney Kermath, junior Jessica Zaper, junior Maura Delaney, and junior Marissa Kassinger, finishing third (1:38.15). Zaper was second in the 50 free (24.33).

Ashland's women are in second place with 755.5 points after two days of competition.

In men's action, there was continued success for Ashland.

Junior Franci Aleksi won the 500 free in 4:37.02, with sophomore Matt Filsinger hot on his heels in second (4:45.94). Freshman Amar Sapcanin won the 100 breaststroke for the Eagles (56.88).

Other Eagle swimmers earning high placings were freshman Will Stuart, who finished second in the 200 butterfly (1:56.93), freshman Josh Dempsey finished third in the 200 back (1:58.00), Sapcanin was second in the 200 medley (1:53.95), and the 200 free relay team - freshman Vince Stevens, Stuart, freshman Joe Cummins, and sophomore Jacob Keilholz - finished second (1:26.33).

Ashland's men sit in second place after two days of competition with 752 points.

The Eagles will conclude the Oberlin invitational on Sunday (Nov. 24), with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
