Eagle Women, Men Finish In Second At Oberlin

Ashland University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up their three-day competition at the Oberlin Invitational on Sunday (Nov. 24), as both teams finished in second place.

Ashland's women finished second with 1,162.5 team points, and the men finished second with 1,082 points overall.

For AU's women, freshman Makayla Tarkenton was able to win in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.43), just ahead of fellow Eagle, freshman Abby Locke, in second (2:29.96). Freshman Sydney Kermath was second in the 100 backstroke (58.11), and sophomore Abigail Ellsworth was just behind her in third (59.39). Ellsworth also finished third in the 100 butterfly (59.40).

Junior Tara Stevens nearly picked up another win in the 200 freestyle, as she finished in second place (1:55.73). Locke was the runner-up in the 400 medley (4:48.68).

In the final event of the weekend, the 400 free relay team of junior Jessica Zaper, Stevens, Kermath and Ellsworth finished in second place (3:34.21).

On the men's side for Ashland, sophomore Matt Filsinger was a winner in the 400 medley (4:09.47), just ahead of his teammate, freshman Josh Dempsey, in second (4:13.39).

The Eagles also went 1-2 in the men's 100 fly. Freshman Will Stuart was first (51.69), with sophomore Jacob Keilholz right behind him as the runner-up (52.26). Sophomore Franci Aleksi won his third event of the weekend in the 200 free (1:43.29). Amar Sapcanin, a freshman, picked up another event win on the weekend in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.94).

In diving action, freshman Isaac Osterfeld finished second in the 1-meter on the men's side (376.95), and freshman Madison Jarrett was second in the 3-meter in the women's competition (365.60).

In the final men's event of the weekend, AU's 400 free team of Stuart, Keilholz, freshman Joe Cummins and sophomore Panos Nikakis finished third (3:13.64).

The Eagles will have a break from competition now, as they'll be back in the pool again after the new year, on Jan. 10 at Findlay.
