On a light day, the AU track and field teams did some heavy lifting.
The 2014 GLIAC outdoor track and field championships began on Wednesday (Apr. 30) at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio and after Day 1, both AU teams are in first place.
The AU men lead the field with 15 points. The Ashland women have 23 points.
The first day of this three-day event included the men's and women's hammer throw and the heptathlon and decathlon.
In the women's hammer, the Eagles claimed three of the top four spots. Cynthia Watt won the conference championship at 197-5 and Kim Habegger was second (197-2). Jessica Bridenthal finished fourth (187-0).
Bryn Campbell was third (197-0) in the men's hammer and Zac Ball (190-2) was fourth.
Macy Caldwell was first in the heptathlon. She ended the day with 3128 points. Jennifer Bjelac was third (2763).
Tyler Chancellor had 3559 points in the decathlon and that gave him second place. Saginaw Valley State's Tyler Grob was first (3566).
The AU men are the defending GLIAC champions.
