With one day left at the 2014 GLIAC outdoor track and field championships, the AU women are still in first place.
When all the action ended on Thursday (May 1), the Ashland women led a 12-team field with 80 points. Defending champ Grand Valley State is second (64) and Tiffin is third (31).
The AU men are third with 40 points. Grand Valley State leads the way with 77 points and Tiffin is second with 42 points. Ten men's teams are in the hunt for the conference championship.
The GLIAC Championships are being held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Thursday's schedule included a number of preliminary heats, but championships were decided in several events. In the women's shot put, Jamie Sindelar was first with a mark of 53-2.25 and Jessica Bridenthal was the runner-up with a throw that measured 50-11.
Donald Duke won a GLIAC crown in the men's shot. His winning throw was 60-10.50. Jason Zahn was fourth at 54-8.
Macy Caldwell wrapped up a championship in the heptathlon with 4888 points. Jennifer Bjelac was third with 4578 points.
Reliable Jennifer Foster tied for third in the pole vault. Her best leap was 12-00.75. Delainey Phelps was sixth in the 10K with a time of 36:33.06. Abigail Burgdorf was fifth in the javelin. Her best mark was 118-6.
In the preliminaries of the men's 110 hurdles, Elijha Owens had the best time. He finished in 14.36.
Cory Lamar led the field in the prelims of the 400. His time was 48.40
Friday is the third and final day of the championships.
