Two familiar faces around the Ashland University campus broke three outdoor World Records and five American Records yesterday on a warm and windy Sunday (Sept. 21) afternoon.

Jud Logan, Head Coach of the Indoor / Outdoor, Men's and Women's Track and Field teams, broke two World Records. The first coming in the 6kg Hammer Throw for the 55-59 age group.

The record-breaking toss came on his fifth throw. With over 400 people on their feet, slow-clapping while Logan swung the hammer over his head, the four-time Olympian brilliantly tossed the hammer 220-7, (67.27 meters) smashing the previous record of 199-9. (60.88 meters) set in 1998.

"It's called the track slow clap, it's a favorite of the field events… you get that rhythmic feeling in the crowd, the clap builds and grows and gets faster, just like what you do when you throw."

"400 people, many former alumni, that I had no idea were going to come, showed up and that made for a really great day" said Logan.

Logan also broke the Outdoor World & American Record in the 55-59 Weight Throw (25lb). The former mark, set in 2004 by Norway's Arild Busterud, was 69-8. (21.29 meters). His throw was marked at 71-3. (21.73 meters).

Logan also holds the World and American record in the Hammer and Weight throw in the 50-54 age group.

A.G. Kruger entered the Ashland Masters Summer Series competition looking to break records as well. The AU Strength and Conditioning coach did just that. Kruger set two new American Records and one World Record on Sunday.

The Sheldon, IA native bested American Records in the Weight Throw (35lb) and the Super Weight (56 lb).

He collected 4,415 points in the Throws Penthalon besting the World Record of 4,133 points set in 1999.

Kruger said, "It was a lot of fun. The throws pentathlon was always something I've wanted to do."

The pentathlon is made up of the, hammer, shot put, discus, javelin, and weight throw. Kruger finished first in the hammer and the weight throw. He took second in both the javelin and discus, and third place in the shot put.

Really it's the perfect event for Kruger who says, "Us throwers just like to throw things… I was about a month out of when my season was over so I figured why not go out and have some fun."

A chipper, but sore, Logan proudly noted, "To have three World Records broken at Ashland is really cool."
