Eagles Continue Strong Season At GVSU Big Meet

Automatic and provisional Division II nationals-qualifying efforts continued to be added and improved on by Ashland University's indoor track and field teams on Friday (Feb. 13) at the Grand Valley State Big Meet.

Three Eagles who previously automatically qualified for nationals improved on those showings on Friday. Senior Shatora Lewis won the weight throw invite division at 70-feet-1¾, senior Elijha Owens took the top spot in the men's 60-meter hurdles open division (7.86 seconds) and junior Jamie Sindelar was second in the women's shot put invite division with a top mark of 54-feet-0½.

There were four new provisional efforts for Ashland on Friday. Juniors David Knack (eighth, 14:33.33) and Isaac Potes (11th, 14:38.40) earned provisional times in the men's 5,000-meter run in the open division, Owens was third in the men's 400-meter dash open division (47.48) and junior Nick Hall was fourth in the men's 1-mile run open division (4:07.31).

Six Eagles improved on previous provisional showings. Senior Jennifer Bjelac took second in the women's long jump invite division (18-feet-9¼), sophomore Megan Tomei was second in the women's weight throw open division (58-feet-10¾), senior Mack Taylor was second in the men's weight throw open division (64-feet-7¾), junior Eric Thompkins was fourth in the men's 60-meter dash open division (6.86), sophomore Bryn Campbell was sixth in the men's weight throw invite division (65-feet-7½) and junior Zac Papay was seventh in the men's shot put invite division (55-feet-0¾).

Ashland's indoor track and field teams will go to Kent State for its Tune-Up on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 9 a.m.
